Short-Eared Owl

Galápagos
Fall 2021

This captivating photograph showcases a Short-Eared Owl against the dramatic backdrop of a small, uninhabited rock island in the Galápagos archipelago. The island serves as a sanctuary for a colossal colony of over a quarter of a million birds who have chosen it as their resting place after their fishing expeditions in the sea.

Hidden away in a secluded ravine, this particular owl is a remarkable find. In contrast to the vibrant and colorful inhabitants of the Galápagos, such as the Blue-Footed Booby and the Red-Footed Booby, which comprise the majority of the island's population, this owl adopts a more subtle gray-blackish coloration, a strategic adaptation to better blend into its surroundings and hunt effectively.
