Red-Footed Booby
In a Tree
Galapagos
Summer 2021
Early in my photography journey, I embarked on a remarkable trip to the Galápagos Islands. One of our stops took us to a tiny island, no more than a rocky outcrop emerging from the vast sea. What made this otherwise barren island special was the incredible colony of over a quarter of a million birds that called it home.Among the diverse avian inhabitants, one bird stood out with unmistakable charm and distinctive features. This bird was famous for its incredibly iridescent pearl-blue beak, a striking contrast to its bright red webbed feet. What makes this species even more fascinating is its choice of nesting sites; despite its webbed feet, it prefers to build its nests in trees, a behavior that adds an extra layer of wonder to its story.
